Laia is a Scholar living under the Martial Empire, which conquered her people and rules them by force. When her brother is arrested for treason, the rebel Scholars offer to save him from execution on one condition: that she go undercover as a slave inside Blackcliff, the empire’s greatest military academy.

Elias is the academy’s finest soldier and wants nothing more than to desert it. Their two accounts alternate, and the point at which they meet decides both.
