In 1916 the French artist Edouard Lefevre leaves his wife Sophie to fight at the Front. When her town falls under German occupation, his portrait of her catches the eye of the local Kommandant, and Sophie risks her family, her reputation and her life on the chance of seeing her husband once more.

Nearly a century later the same painting hangs in Liv’s London house, given to her by her young husband shortly before he died. When a stranger recognises it, she has to decide what she is prepared to do to keep it.
