Murakami’s first two novels, published together: Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973.

They follow an unnamed narrator and his friend, known only as the Rat. In the first, the narrator is home from college for the summer, drinking beer in J’s Bar and failing to write. In the second, he is running a translation business in Tokyo, living with twin girls who arrive without explanation, and looking for a pinball machine he used to play. The books Murakami wrote at his kitchen table after deciding, at a baseball game, that he would try being a novelist.
