Lordor Nordstrom founds a small Missouri town, sends to Sweden for a wife, and lays out a hilltop cemetery for the families who will come after him. Still Meadows, he calls it.

It turns out to be less restful than the name suggests. The people buried there go on talking, keeping up with the town below and with each other, and the novel follows a hundred years of one place from both sides of the hill.
