Turtle Alveston is fourteen and roams miles of woodland on the northern California coast, where she knows every creek and tide pool. Her physical world is enormous and her personal one is very small.

Since her mother’s death she has lived alone with her father Martin, who is charismatic, well read, survivalist, and abusive, and who has taught her that nobody else is worth anything. Then she meets a boy from town, and starts to see the shape of what she is inside.
