Frankl spent three years in Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and lost almost his entire family. The first half of this book is his account of what he saw; the second sets out logotherapy, the school of psychotherapy he founded on the observation that survival correlated less with strength than with having something left to live for. Its central argument — that we cannot choose our circumstances but retain the choice of our response — has kept it in print for over seventy years.
