Maria is a girl from a village in Brazil whose first experiences of love leave her convinced that love is a terrible thing that will only make her suffer. A chance meeting in Rio takes her to Geneva, where she expects fame and money and finds work in a nightclub instead.
Her view of love is put to the test when she meets a young painter. Maria has to choose between pleasure taken for its own sake and the risk of something she has decided does not exist.
