Ishmael signs on to the whaler Pequod out of Nantucket and discovers that its captain has no interest in oil. Ahab lost a leg to a white sperm whale and has bound the crew, over a shared cup, to hunting that one animal to its death.
To Ahab the whale is not a creature but the visible face of something that means him harm. Around that pursuit Melville assembles a novel that stops for chapters at a time to explain rope, whale anatomy and the colour white, and is the stranger for it.
