It tells of the thirteenth-century meeting between the respected cleric Rumi and the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, and of the forty rules of love that Shams teaches him, a meeting that turns a successful but unhappy scholar into a poet. As Ella reads, she recognises her own life in the story, and understands that Zahara has come to do for her what Shams did for Rumi.
