Chika Jeune was born in Haiti three years before the 2010 earthquake, and came to the orphanage Albom runs in Port-au-Prince after her mother died giving birth to her brother. She was five when she was found to have a brain tumour that could not be treated in Haiti.
Albom and his wife brought her to Michigan and spent two years trying to save her, travelling to hospitals in the United States and Germany. This is his account of those years, and of a child who arrived as a responsibility and became a daughter.
