Huck fakes his own murder to escape his father and sets off down the Mississippi on a raft with Jim, a man escaping slavery. The river carries them past feuding families, confidence tricksters and towns full of people who would return Jim for the reward.

Huck has been taught that helping Jim is theft and a sin, and spends the novel arguing himself into doing it anyway. Written throughout in the vernacular, which was new, and still the book most American novels are measured against.
