Description

By Anthony Doerr

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris, near the Museum of Natural History where he is master of the locks. She goes blind at six, and he builds her a scale model of their neighbourhood so she can learn it by touch. When the Germans arrive they flee to Saint-Malo, carrying something the museum wants kept safe.

Werner is an orphan in a German mining town whose gift for radios takes him out of the mines and into a brutal academy, and then into a unit tracking resistance broadcasts across occupied Europe. Their paths cross in Saint-Malo in August 1944, while the town is being destroyed.
