Something is outside, and anyone who looks at it goes violently mad. Society has come apart behind boarded windows, and the survivors have learned to live by touch and sound alone.

Malorie has two small children who have never been allowed to see the world. To reach the one place that may still be safe, the three of them get into a rowing boat and go twenty miles down the river blindfolded, listening for what is on the bank.
