Jerusha Abbott has lived her whole life at the dreary John Grier Home. At seventeen her time there is up and her prospects are thin, until an anonymous trustee offers to send her to a smart women’s college on one condition: that she write to him every month about her progress, and expect no reply.

She never sees him, only his shadow once, long-legged on a wall, and so she addresses her letters to Daddy-Long-Legs. The novel is those letters, and Jerusha is very funny in them.
