Heidi is five and orphaned when her aunt leaves her with a grandfather who lives alone on an alp above the village and speaks to nobody. Within a season she has the run of the mountain, a friend in Peter the goatherd, and a grandfather who has started coming down to church.

Then she is taken to Frankfurt as a companion to Clara, a wealthy invalid girl, and begins to sicken with homesickness for a place nobody there believes in.
