Wuthering Heights loses Heathcliff for three years: he overhears half a sentence, walks out into a storm, and returns rich and unrecognisable. Emily Brontë never says where he went.

Stewart gives him those years and his own voice — a man travelling west across the north of England as a brute, a liar and a robber of graves, going by another name. Written in a hard, unsentimental register that makes no case for him.
