The Spanish House is a hotch-potch of Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as though whoever started it got bored partway through. Locals have always called it a folly, and by now it is close to derelict.

When its reclusive owner dies without a will, the house passes to Isabel Delancey, a London violinist recently widowed and newly broke, who arrives with two children and no idea how to live in it. The neighbour who has wanted the land for years is prepared to be patient.
