Jojo and his toddler sister Kayla live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and with the occasional presence of their mother Leonie, who is addicted to drugs and sees visions of her dead brother when she is high. Mam is dying of cancer, and quiet, steady Pop is trying to teach Jojo how to be a man.
When the white father of Leonie’s children is released from prison, she puts the children and a friend in the car and drives north to Parchman Farm, the state penitentiary, to fetch him. A road novel that draws on Faulkner and Morrison, the Odyssey and the Old Testament, and carries the dead along with the living.
