The Alexandrian Society keeps the knowledge the ancient world was supposed to have lost, and every decade it invites six of the most gifted magicians alive to compete for five places.

This decade’s six include two physicists who cannot work apart and cannot stand each other, an illusionist, a telepath, an empath and a naturalist. They have a year in the archives, and none of them has been told what the sixth place actually costs.
