Rumi was born in 1207 and until the age of thirty-seven was a respected scholar and teacher. Then he met the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, of whom he said that what he had previously thought of as God he had now met in a human being. When Shams disappeared, Rumi began to speak poetry.
This expanded edition is the largest single collection of Barks’s translations, organised by theme across several hundred poems, and is the book through which most English readers have encountered Rumi.
