In the Elder Days the Rings of Power were made, and Sauron forged the One Ring in secret and put his own power into it, so that he could rule all the others. The Ring was taken from him, and passed through unlikely hands, and has spent sixty years in a hobbit’s pocket in the Shire.

Frodo Baggins inherits it, and learns what it is. The first part of The Lord of the Rings takes him from Bag End to Rivendell, and then south with eight companions, as far as the Ring will let them stay together.
