1974. Ernt Allbright comes home from Vietnam a changed and volatile man, and on an impulse moves his wife and thirteen-year-old daughter Leni to a remote cabin in Alaska, with no electricity, no neighbours nearby and no plan for the winter.

The place is beautiful and completely unforgiving, and as the light goes out of the year Ernt’s temper turns inward on the family. Leni has to work out which is more dangerous, the wilderness outside or her own father.
