For twenty-eight years Checkpoint Charlie was the one place in a divided continent where East faced West across a hundred yards of no man’s land. This is the story of the people who lived there, served there or escaped through it between 13 August 1961 and 9 November 1989.
MacGregor interviews soldiers, spies, politicians, journalists, policemen and escapees from both sides of the Cold War divide, and reconstructs daily life in the city everyone treated as the hot spot of the Cold War. More than two hundred people are known to have died trying to cross the Wall, and many more died later of their wounds in East German hospitals and prisons.
