Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia, an outcast even among the other slaves, and coming into an age at which the plantation has worse in store for her. When Caesar tells her about the underground railroad, they run.
In Whitehead’s version the railroad is literal: engines and track under the ground, and each state Cora surfaces in is a different America with a different theory about what to do with black people. Behind her the whole way is Ridgeway, the slave catcher who never found her mother.
