Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband she is a fearlessly opinionated partner; to the other private-school mothers in Seattle she is a disgrace; to architects she is a lost genius; and to her fifteen-year-old daughter Bee she is simply Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It starts when Bee’s perfect report card earns the reward she was promised, a family trip to Antarctica, and Bernadette’s dislike of Seattle and of people in general turns out to be worse than anyone knew. Bee assembles the story from emails, invoices and school memos.
