Afghanistan, 1952. In the village of Shadbagh, Abdullah and his little sister Pari live with their father Saboor, who is always looking for work, and a stepmother who has her own losses. To Abdullah, Pari is everything.

What happens to them one autumn, on a journey across the desert to Kabul, sets in motion a story that runs for sixty years and reaches Paris, San Francisco and a Greek island, following the people the decision touched and the ones born long afterwards who are still living with it.
