Esma tells her family’s story back three generations, to a village on the banks of the Euphrates and the birth of twin girls, Pembe and Jamila, named Pink and Beautiful instead of the names their mother wanted for them, Destiny and Enough. Their futures could hardly be more different, and both end on a street in East London in 1978.
