Ka, a poet who has spent twelve years exiled in Germany, returns to Turkey and travels to the remote city of Kars, ostensibly to report on a wave of suicides among religious girls forbidden to wear headscarves.

He is also there because Ipek, whom he knew years ago, is now single and living in the town. Snow closes the roads, the town is cut off, a military coup is staged in the theatre, and Ka spends three days between secularists, Islamists, the police and his own poems.
